A Victorian woman has made a “one in a billion” discovery at her local Woolworths supermarket: a perfectly round egg.
The shopper shared the “eggcellent” find with Melbourne’s 3AW broadcaster Jacqui Felgate, who said it came in a carton purchased at an inner-city Woolworths supermarket.
“From a follower: This is so random, but I thought I would share this eggcellent find,” the post read.
A “quick google” revealed it was not only a “one in a billion” discovery, but that the rare eggs have actually sold for a pretty penny.
Felgate wrote: “Literally one in a billion eggs are round and the last one that was found sold for over $1400!”
Users reacted to the smashing find, some having sympathy for the “poor chook” that had to lay it, and others making the most of the opportunity to land an egg pun.
“Firstly wow! Secondly, that lady either has small hands or that egg is MASSIVE,” one user wrote.
“Yolkidding me,” another wrote.
One joked: “Folks buying eggs for $1400? That’s eggtortion.”
“Nah, I’d say that’s cheep cheep,” a user replied.
Other followers admitted they had to do a double-take, thinking the egg was a giant ball of chocolate or caramel at first. But some said they had also found round eggs in their grocery hauls.
One even suggested the woman who found the rare egg test her luck and buy a lottery ticket.
Even more users were baffled by the potentially hefty price tag a round egg could fetch, writing they “want to know who spend $1400. And what do they do with it.”
“You absolutely either need to sell or frame it,” one woman suggested.
In 2019, a perfectly round egg made its way to auction on eBay, according to online publication Fine Dining Experts. The auction listed the egg’s starting price at $US100 (just over $A145 at the exchange rates of the time) and had minimum bidding price of $US30 (or almost $A44 at the time).
Now that’s a mighty expensive omelette.
