Unbaby.me Chrome extension filters out Facebook baby photos, replaces with preferred images

FACEBOOK friends oversharing their baby photos? Wish you could replace them with, say, cats? Believe it or not, there's an app for that.

BABIES in boots, babies smiling, babies eating - it's becoming the norm for many Facebook users scrolling down their news feeds.

But with the baby invasion becoming too much for some, a browser extension has been developed to help curb the images and replace them instead with anything from cats in hats to Bill Murray.

Creator Chris Baker, based in New York, said he and friends Yvonne Cheng and Pete Marquis had been lamenting how boring their newsfeeds had become with the onslaught of baby photos.

"Every friend from high school and beyond were churning out new life and giving us the play-by-play," he said.

"Something had to be done. A browser extension that removed and replaced the stuff was an easy programming job, not much money for us to throw at, and so unbaby.me was born."

Unbaby.me uses keywords typically written in baby photo captions to identify and replace the offending photo.

Sunshine Coast mum Kayla Tratt said she loved the idea.

Mrs Tratt said she used social media to share photos of three-year-old daughter Sienna, 3, and Taj, 18 months, with people interstate.

"At first I was posting heaps ... I don't think I inundate people with them."

She said the idea was perfect for people looking to avoid photos of their ex-partners or of other bad photos.

With the Google Chrome Unbaby.me extension receiving unprecedented amounts of feedback, Mr Baker said new versions had been designed to remove political chatter, food or even wedding pictures.

Later versions will be called Rather.
