UK Labour leader Ed Miliband joins fun on twitter as #Milifandom takes on a life of its own

HE is not a singer or an actor or a model. But fans can’t get enough of his steely glare. Here’s how a man in the least sexy profession on Earth became the UK’s newest heartthrob.

HORMONES are flying all over the internet for the UK’s newest heartthrob.

But he’s not a singer or an actor or a model. He works in what might be described as one of the least sexy professions on the planet. But still, young girls are swooning.

Ed Miliband, bland Labour leader two weeks ago, is now challenging One Direction for most fangirls.

It all started when Miliband, in the throes of election silly season in Britain, directed a heartfelt message to the nation during a leaders’ debate a fortnight ago.

His steely glare clearly resonated with a younger audience. Though most of his new fans can’t vote, it hasn’t stopped them from showing their support.

On Twitter, young women wrote of the 45-year-old: “I love ed miliband [sic] so much it is painful” and “if I ever met ed miliband [sic] I could die happy”.

Hashtags #Milibae and #Milifandom have been trending and photoshop edits have painted the London-born politician as Superman, Harry Styles of 1D fame and James Bond, leaning casually against the bonnet of a vintage silver sports car.

According to Buzzfeed, the phenomenon began when a 17-year-old Twitter user named Abby declared herself as an Ed Miliband enthusiast. But she is not just interested in Miliband for his looks.

Abby (@twcuddleston), who has more than 16,000 followers, wants him for his policies, too.

Miliband, clearly taken by all the attention, thanked Abby personally. On Twitter, of course. He wrote: “There’s a lot at stake at this election for young people. I hope more young people will join you and get involved”.

Prime Minister David Cameron has his own loyal band of followers but the #Cameronettes have hardly made a dent on social media.

The UK General Election is scheduled for May 7. Plenty of time to turn things around for the PM.
