Lockdown sends social media into meme frenzy

Outages of the viral video-sharing platform TikTok have been recorded across the globe with the outlet and its Chinese owned parent company yet to comment on the failures.

The largest amount of complaints about the app’s usability were just before 6am – according to Downdetector.

The website, which tracks service outages online, said most of the issues were found in the United States with New York and California predominantly affected.

Users took to other social media to complain about the outage.

“Me going through the five stages of grief every time I checkTikTokk again,” one woman wrote on Twitter.

“Everyone coming to terms with their TikTok addiction now that it’s not working,” another said.

The app is available in 150 different countries, with a total of over one billion users. It is unclear if the potential outage has affected any other countries.

In the United States alone, where the reports initially emerged, there are over 200 million users.

The social media company has not yet commented on the reports.

It comes as ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, reportedly more than doubled its revenue last year to a whopping $US34.3 billion ($A45 billion).
