Well-known Australian commentator and media personality Jane Caro has questioned a Twitter moderation decision to OK a tweet that called her a “pedophile”.
“So, I reported a tweet where I was called a pedophile (sic). This is Twitter’s response. I wonder what they have to say to you to get any consequences?” she tweeted on Friday evening.

Earlier on Friday evening, Caro shared a Guardian column that discussed the controversy surrounding Yumi Stynes’ and Dr Melissa Kang’s book, Welcome To Sex, with no additional comment of her own.
The column’s author, Fiona Katauskas, shared personal experiences with her own sex education book and advocated for open, honest, and comprehensive sex education to empower children and protect them from harm.
A faceless and nameless account – @ThreeSilos – replied, “Not your pedophile (sic) way”.
A snapshot of Twitter’s response said, “After reviewing the available information, we determined that there were no violations of the Twitter rules in the content you reported.”
“We appreciate your help and encourage you to reach out again in the future if you see any potential violations,” it continued.
Twitter’s Help Centre states: “Twitter’s purpose is to serve the public conversation. Violence, harassment and other similar types of behaviour discourage people from expressing themselves, and ultimately diminish the value of global public conversation.”
“You may not share abusive content, engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so,” it continued.
“You may not attack other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.”
Caro’s followers were quick to point out flaws in the decision.
“I reckon it’s rapidly becoming time for someone to consider legal action. Aimed at both the tweet, making the accusation & Twitter for failing to take action,” one suggested.
“Since Musk took over, this sort of behaviour is deemed free speech if directed at a progressive. A progressive criticising a right winger is much more likely to generate an enforcement action,” commented another.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk acquired the platform in October 2022 with an overhaul regarding free speech high on his agenda.
“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” he claimed last year.
