A shopper has been left stunned after finding what looks like “alien eggs” on a car park ceiling.

The patron took the snap at Westfield Kotara in Newcastle, uploading the image online in a desperate search for answers over the peculiar growths.

“What are these things that are hanging from the ceiling of the Westfield Kotara parking lot?” the curious customer put to the Reddit community.

Electricians and builders were quick to point out the suspicious mounds were in fact bolts covered by vermiculite fire spray, a coating that provides fire protection to structural bolts and prevents fires from travelling through the ceiling.

“It’s (usually) behind the pretty fake layers that go over the top of things,” a self-described electrician commented.

“This is a retrofit job and it’s a car park, not a nice fancy shop front,” said another.

Though this seemed to be a plausible explanation indeed, it didn’t stop other Redditors from putting forward their own guesses.

Some proposals were more convincing than others.

“Hatching more parking space sensors,” said one.

“That’s how managers reproduce,” said another.

Other commenters put forward some more out-of-this-world suggestions.

“Alien eggs,” said one.

“It’s the start of the invasion,” said another.

“I for one welcome our new insect overlords.”

Others speculated the suspicious mounds might be of a more entomological variety.

“Didn’t you know Kotara was built on an endangered species of wasps nests? They had to build the car park to coexist with them,” said one user.

“Spider queen egg sacks,” said another.

“Gated community wasp housing.”
