‘P***es me off’: Melborune woman launches into wild rant over tram fare

A woman has been filmed ranting at another commuter after she reportedly didn’t swipe her travel card on a Melbourne tram.

Wild footage has captured the moment a woman ranted and swore at another commuter after a disagreement over whether she swiped her travel card on a Melbourne tram.

In a video posted to Instagram account ‘browncardigan’ on Sunday, a woman dressed in all black is seen approaching a younger female who is seated quietly on the tram with her jacket hood pulled over her head.

“You got on the tram without a swipe card. It’s not free,” the woman tells the younger passenger.

“How do you get on the public transport system? We’re supposed to support it.

“It’s not free, no wonder we’ve still got problems.”

Continuing to rant, the woman then slammed the young commuter for seemingly spending money on other luxuries when she allegedly neglected to pay for her tram fare.

“You can get your glasses, you can get your nails done, you can get a brand new mobile, but you can’t afford to get a bloody myki card,” she said.

“You’re not my mother,” the younger woman replied.

“It doesn’t matter, it p***es me off becuase people like you abuse it” the woman continued.

Perplexed, the younger woman asked: “Who are you? You don’t have to tell me what to do”.

“My name is Mary,” the woman shouted.

“OK good for you Mary,” the passenger responded before tensions continued to rise.

“Don’t f****** ignore me b****,” said Mary who yelled “swipe your card” as she moved away and seat of her own.

Reacting to the exchange, the passenger filming the video is heard shouting “geez Mary” before exiting the tram.

The footage received mixed reactions on social media, with some suggesting Mary should “mind her own business” and arguing public transport should be free.

“Go after the billionaires Mary you’re falling for the trap,” one person commented.

“Tax dollars pay for public transportation so it should be free,” said another.

“Mind your business. You have no idea about that person’s situation,” suggested another.

“$70 a week for the tram is not it Mary,” another person added.

However, others were quick to prise Mary as a “legend” and “responsible citizen”.

“Mary is right. People who don’t tap on are the reason public transport prices have to increase. Same as those who steal groceries, they rise our prices to make up for it,” one person commented.

“She’s not wrong. iPhone in hand, nails done, pay for the tram eh,” said another.

“She is 100 per cent in the right here. Responsible citizen standing up for what is right instead of relying on government to create tougher legislation,” another person commented.

According to Public Transport Victoria, passengers need to pay the correct fare and carry any concession entitlement to travel with a valid ticked.

Passengers who don’t have a valid ticket may be fined.
