New Twitter recap feature reminds you of what you missed offline, the first of several new additions

FINDING it hard to keep up with Twitter’s 500 million daily updates? Help is at hand with the first of a series of new features.

TWITTER will launch a new service today to help users keep up with its 500 million rapidly moving daily posts.

Dubbed Recap, the new feature will highlight a selection of tweets users missed when offline.

In a statement, the social network described the feature as a way to “keep up or catch up” with fast-moving updates, “without compromising the real-time nature of Twitter”.

Initially Recap will only be available in Twitter’s Apple app.

The feature will appear automatically on top of a users’s Twitter feed when they haven’t checked into the service for a while, delivering three tweets based on the user’s interactions.

No promoted tweets will feature in the service, with Twitter instead drawing from accounts users follow and on subjects in which they have shown an interest.

“If you check in on Twitter now and then for a quick snapshot of what’s happening, you’ll see the recap more often,” Twitter’s statement read.

“If you spend a lot more time on Twitter already, you’ll see it less.”

Recap is the first major non-chronological addition to Twitter, working similarly to the controversial Facebook Timeline that delivers updates it determines to be most relevant.

The feature is one of several additions Twitter plans to roll out over the coming months, with others including an “instant, personalised timeline” for newcomers who have yet to follow accounts, and updates to Direct Messages.

The Recap feature will be rolled out to Twitter’s website and Google Android app at date yet to be revealed.
