Mike Baird cops it over ‘out of touch’ post
MIKE Baird is continuing his mission to convince us he’s not like a regular Premier, he’s a cool Premier. This time, it’s really backfired.
MIKE Baird can do no right.
The once-popular NSW Premier — lauded for his lovably daggy dad jokes and social media savvy — has lost favour with the online audience he once was buoyed by, and it’s never been more apparent than in a Facebook post over the weekend.
Yesterday Mr Baird took to Facebook in an attempt at a joke and message to spread awareness of the state’s official “graffiti removal day”.
He posted a picture of himself standing in front of a caricature style mural. The mural depicts the premier enjoying a glass of Penfolds grange and a cigar in a casino at 1:31am, a minute after the lockout time that was controversially imposed in 2014, sacrificing his popularity in the process.
Today, more than 4200 comments later, Mr Baird probably realises he made a mistake.
Commenters crucified the premier for dismissing the piece of street art by Sydney artist Scott Marsh as “graffiti”, and really let him have it when it was realised the artwork has been removed more than five months ago.
In the thousands of comments, Mr Baird was accused of being “out of touch”, of saving up the photo for months for a “dumb joke”, and being the “troll king of aus politics”.
“Street art ... not tagging. but street art like what you are standing in front of is of cultural importance and a tourist attraction. Lots of MONEY to be made from street art tours, books an postcards,” Jen Contessa Redding posted.
“Why do you keep making a fool of yourself? I thought you would have had enough of yourself like the rest of us,” Lawrence hand said.
“Did you know NSW has an official ‘premier removal day’? Well, it does. Your days are numbered. Just saying,” Simon Lockyer wrote.
A series of unpopular decisions has seen Mr Baird’s popularity plummet in recent months.
Restrictions to alcohol sales and the tough Sydney lockout laws which exclude the Star Casino, along with the greyhound ban and following backflip, have been among issues that have cost him support.
