Mark Zuckerberg celebrates on his wall as Facebook hits new peak of a billion users in a day
THREE years ago, Facebook celebrated one billion users. This week, the social network marked the first day one in seven people on Earth were logged in at the same time.
FOR the first time since the social network exploded onto the world scene, Facebook has reached one billion users logged in on a single day.
Writing on his profile wall, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg proudly announced that “1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family” on Monday.
Mr Zuckerberg said it was the first time Facebook has reached this milestone, and thanked his users for their commitment to the network.
In 2012, Facebook celebrated the milestone of having one billion active users.
Facebook was founded in February 2004 by Zuckerberg and his Harvard College roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Andrew McCollum.
Initially, membership extended to only Harvard students, but following internal success it expanded to other Boston universities.
In 2006, minimum age guidelines were implemented, and users are now required to indicate they are 13 years or older when signing up.
