Instagram reaches 10-year-anniversary

It’s a simple picture of a dog but this 10-year-old photo ended up making the person who posted it a very rich man.

Fitness Influencers: Who can you really trust on Instagram?

Social media platform Instagram has been part of our lives for a decade with the photo-sharing app turns 10 on Tuesday.

First released publicly on October 6, 2010 it began life as Burbn, a social check in app being developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, but they changed direction when they realised people wanted to use it to share photos.

And the rest is history.

It now has more than a billion monthly active users and is responsible for creating a whole new industry of “influencers”.

The app has also played host to some huge cultural moments.

Beyonce announced her second pregnancy on the app (while Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott introduced the world to their daughter Stormi on it too).

Jennifer Aniston had people hoping for a Friends reunion after sharing a photo of the cast together when she first joined Instagram last year and also set a record for clocking up 1 million followers.

Her record was toppled just recently by Sir David Attenborough, who has joined the app to spread the word about climate change.

Life and death are contributors to a post’s performance of the app.

Selena Gomez bridged both extremes with a post about her friend Francia Raisa donating her kidney to save the singer’s life.

Two out of the three most liked posts revolve around the deaths of controversial rapper XXXTentacion in 2018 and the shock death of actor Chadwick Boseman in August.

But the most popular post of all time remains this one of an egg.
