Calls for Lidia Thorpe to quit politics

Greens senator Lidia Thorpe has caused a stir on social media after sharing a photo of her posing on a motorbike only two months after she was disciplined for an undisclosed affair with a bikie boss.

An image posted to her public Instagram account on Wednesday shows Senator Thorpe posing atop a black motorbike as two motorcyclists stand beside her.

The tongue-in-cheek post was captioned “ran into some old mates”.

The post has attracted more than 10,000 likes, with followers leaving comments including “icon behaviour” and “omg this level trolling is hilarious”.

Senator Thorpe appeared to be acknowledging the scandal she was embroiled in two months ago when reports emerged she had an affair with a former bikie boss.

The ABC revealed in October that Senator Thorpe had briefly dated former Rebels bikie member Dean Martin while she held a role on a joint parliamentary law enforcement committee.

The committee had reportedly discussed sensitive information regarding bikie gang activity and organised crime during the period the pair were dating.

Mr Martin, who had been a longtime Rebels member, has no criminal convictions.

Senator Thorpe was forced to resign from her position as Greens deputy Senate leader, with party leader Adam Bandt saying she had shown “a significant lack of judgment”.

“I expect her now to show better judgment in the future, she’s told me that she understands the seriousness of this step that I have taken,” Mr Bandt said.

He said Senator Thorpe still had “great potential” to be an influential federal politician.

“She is a senator who has a lot to offer this country, especially with First Nations justice,” he said.

Senator Thorpe’s office was contacted for comment.
