Go go Power Rangers! James Van Der Beek writes and stars in Gritty remake

WHAT do you get when you cross Dawson’s Creek with Power Rangers? A violent, sexy, NSFW Youtube hit, that’s what.

A POWER Rangers reboot written and starring James Van Der Beek and directed by a guy famous for making Taylor Swift and Britney Spears music videos?

Turns out, it’s the best thing the internet never knew it needed.

Sweet scar Dawson.

The kitsch Nineties kids series has gotten the gritty superhero treatment in a new short film titled Power/Rangers.

The 15 minute clip debuted on YouTube on Monday and has already caused an uproar online, with over 9 million views and counting.

Why? Well, it’s pretty bloody awesome.

Featuring special effects worthy of a Marvel movie, a story so dark you’d think it was penned by Christopher Nolan and unbelievably choreographed (and violent!) action scenes, it’s the NSFW Power Rangers people have been demanding.

Just a bit sexier than the 90’s TV show.

The jaw-dropper is directed by Joseph Kahn who — despite two underseen feature films — is best known for his work directing pop music videos such as ‘Backstreet’s Back’ for the Backstreet Boys, Enrique Iglesias’ ‘Hero’, Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’, Britney’s iconic ‘Toxic’ clip and most recently ‘Black Space’ for Taylor Swift.

While talks of a big budget Power Rangers movie reboot have been circulating for the past few years — with Lionsgate even said to be developing one as we speak — Kahn has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the director’s gig.

Oh No! Not the red Power Ranger!

Dawson Leery himself stars as a duplicitous bad guy in the short film, complete with facial scars, a robotic leg and impressive Samurai skills.

And he’s not the only Hollywood name in the mix, with action babes Gina Carano from the Fast and the Furious franchise and Battlestar Galactica favourite Katee Sackhoff popping up as Pink Ranger Kimberly.

Oh yeah, and keep an eye out for a cameo from possibly the kitschest villain from the Power Rangers universe: Rita Repulsa.

The nostalgia is strong with this one.
