Facebook has come a long way since its inception in 2004
IT might be hard to believe, but Facebook is now 11 years old. In celebration of its birthday, we have taken a look back at how it has changed.
FACEBOOK turned 11 yesterday and looking back, it has come a long way since its inception in February 2004.
By December 2004, the popular social media platform had 1 million members, significantly smaller than the 1.39 billion users it has today.
An astounding 64 per cent of those users visit Facebook daily and 83 per cent are based outside the US and Canada.
In 2005, Facebook launched their photos section and in 2006 Facebook mobile and the news feed were established.
A year later Facebook’s iPhone app and chat were born.
The instalment of the ‘like’ button came in 2009 and by 2010 the platform has 500 million users.
Enter 2012 and Facebook becomes a publicly listed company.
They also acquired Instagram the same year and hit 1 billion users.
In 2013, Facebook launched the internet.org initiative in a hope to bring the entire planet online.
Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg used the momentous occasion to spread a message of friendship.
“Today is a day to celebrate friends. It’s also Facebook’s birthday, but today isn’t about celebrating us,” he wrote.
“It’s about friendship.
“Thank you for being part of our community of friends. Let’s turn today into a day to celebrate a friend. #friendsday.”
