THERE’S at least one member of the Trump family who is winning hearts this week.
That would be President-elect Donald Trump’s five-year-old granddaughter, Arabella Rose Kushner, who is the eldest child of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
An Instagram video of the adorable young girl is doing the rounds on Chinese social media after the shock result of the US presidential election.
In the clip, which was shared on Ivanka’s social media account back in February, little Arabella recites a few lines from Tang dynasty poems in Mandarin while dressed in a traditional Chinese outfit in red.
In the background, lanterns and Chinese New York decorations are displayed alongside the Chinese character for “happiness”.
“Arabella wanted to have a pre-bedtime #ChineseNewYear party this past Sunday evening,” the 35-year-old businesswoman captioned the post. “She got all dressed up and performed songs and poems for Jared, Joseph and me. It was pretty adorable.”
Nine months later, the at-home video has gone viral on Weibo, a social media platform often referred to as China’s Twitter, garnering about 8.7 million views and 20,000 likes.
“She is a lovely and smart girl,” one user wrote.
“This little girl’s Chinese is pretty good,” another commented. “At least we can understand what poem she is reciting. A lovely little girl.”
Another Weibo user wrote: “The little girl’s language skill is a result of Ivanka’s education, nothing to do with Trump himself.”
Throughout his election campaign, Mr Trump lambasted China, pledging to slap 45 per cent tariffs on imported Chinese goods, labelling the country a currency manipulator and alleging it stole US industrial jobs.
Mr Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping by phone on Sunday following his stunning election victory.
“During the call, the leaders established a clear sense of mutual respect for one another, and President-elect Trump stated that he believes the two leaders will have one of the strongest relationships for both countries moving forward,” the Trump transition team said in a brief statement.
Annually there is $650 billion in trade between the two countries, CNN reports. Although there has been intense speculation over the impact of Mr Trump’s win on issues facing the world’s two largest economies, from global trade and climate change to the security balance in the Asia-Pacific.
The Global Times, a nationalist tabloid published by the ruling Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper, said if Mr Trump decided to slap China with heavy tariffs it would “paralyse” bilateral trade.
“When the time comes, large orders for Boeing planes would switch to Europe, US auto sales in China would face setbacks, Apple phones would essentially be crowded out, and US soybeans and corn would be eradicated from China,” the publication wrote.
“Trump, coming from a business background, is very astute. We do not believe he will treat China-US trade so childishly.”
