You might want to brace yourself for this one.

A pair of dilapidated “studio apartments” up for rent has dumbfounded users on a Sydney Facebook group, with some wondering how it ever came to this.

The tiny rooms — one featuring cracked tiles and a toilet at arm’s reach from the bed — are up for $350 and $345 per week, drawing dozens of comments from people asking if they were serious.

The rooms are located in inner-city Paddington and come furnished with their own microwave, washing machine and unlimited internet.

“I cant believe my eyes, this is absolutely disgusting who would want to rent this out… This is no way a studio,” one person said under the listing.

“It’s even unfit for animals to live in. Asking for that much rent at least fix flooring and paint the walls Unliveable conditions,” another said.

“I’d rather live in a coffin,” one person quipped.

“I thought it was a jail room,” another person added.

“Disgusting,” another wrote.

Others said the apartments “look like they started demolition and changed their mind halfway through”.

However, some weren’t that horrified by the dystopian reality before their eyes, and chose to look on the bright side.

“Just had another look, you can sit on the can and watch TV. Shut up and take my money I am ready to move this weekend. Sorry to be a pest, but does the can of bug killer come with the price? Is there a rodent issue with this palace?” another user said.

Rent prices across the country have continued to surge into 2023, with Sydney coming out in front yet again.

Over the 30 days to January 12, capital city asking rents rose by another 2.2 per cent, with the 12-month rise standing at 24.6 per cent.

National rents across all parts of Australian rose by 18 per cent over the same 12-month period.

The national median weekly asking rent for a dwelling is currently at $556.72.

The 2021 census released last year revealed that 10.1 per cent — or 1,043,776 homes — of Australia’s 10,318,997 private dwellings were unoccupied on the night of the national survey.

My Housing Market chief economist Andrew Wilson said Australia would continue to struggle with a shortage of rental properties for the foreseeable future.

“There’s been no real sign of a resurgence in building approvals. We’re continuing to create an undersupply,” he said.

“And we’re going to see this year an unprecedented surge in migration, upwards of 200,000 new residents are set to enter Australia this year, which will increase demand.”
