The thief has become a YouTube sensation after a video of the failed robbery on a Chilean bus went viral.

The footage shows him trying unsuccessfully to wrestle a woman’s purse from her grasp.

Worse, he then gets trapped on the vehicle with his arm caught in the door.

Most shamefully of all. the driver stars hitting him baseball bat and he bursts into tears.

Eventually, the bus stops and he is escorted out by the police.

The CCTV clip of the attempted robbery in the city of Conception has now had more than 500,000 views.

The young man is seen getting on to a bus behind the passengers while an accomplice waits outside.

He laughs as he grabs the handbag, but the savvy woman manages to keep hold of it.

The boy then manages to get his arm stuck in the door as he tries to run off.

Social media users described his actions as “ridiculously stupid” and “embarrassing”.

But some said they felt sorry for the youth, observing that he looked inexperienced and might have been desperate. Others said the driver had gone over the top by repeatedly hitting him with the bat.

At any rate, between the beating and his arrest, the aspiring thief will probably have learned his lesson.

His new-found fame as a laughing stock may also persuade him that he isn’t cut out for a life of crime.
