Apple event left many underwhelmed but had an unlikely hero
IPHONE fans have vented their disappointment after the tech giant made one big mistake in its new flagship models.
A LACK of game-changing innovation has led to the new Apple iPhone models being met with a wave of apathy.
The tech giant unveiled three new iPhones at its Californian headquarters, including its biggest and most expensive model yet.
The company showed off the iPhone Xs as well as a “Max” version, which has a bigger screen than last year’s dramatically redesigned iPhone X.
But nothing announced overnight was as significant as the the 2017 model, which ushered in a host of new features, such as FaceID and an edge-to-edge screen enabled by the disappearance of the Home button.
However, the company did introduce a new, cheaper version called the iPhone Xr, which boasts most of the hi-tech features of its predecessor but saves money by skimping on the materials. Other big news revolved around the new Apple Watch 4 range, which has some really interesting new capabilities.
But for many tech fans, the historically high price tag for the iPhone Xs Max, which will cost Australians as much as $2369 when it arrives in Australia on September 21, was hard to look past.
My wallet is already hurting looking at the iPhone X max

Guess I'm definitely sticking to my iPhone 6 as the new iPhones are now up to $2000 plus for the model I need to hold my photos. ðð±

Someone, please buy me an iPhone XS. Makes total sense to spend $2000 on a phone. pic.twitter.com/0QPufBo1QL

BREAKING NEWS: Iâm staying with iPhone X and Iâm gonna be happy about it

Others weren’t overly impressed by the new hardware upgrades and the lack of any real notable new software features on the phones.
“Boy, this year’s iPhones sure felt like a letdown, huh?”, New York Magazine’s tech writer Jake Swearingen wrote , calling it “a pretty boring year” for iphones.
“Everything that came just felt a little blah this year — even more so than I was expecting.”
As he pointed out, the smartphone plateau has been talked about for years, and for many today’s event was evidence of the inevitable fact that it’s getting harder and harder to innovate each year in a way that gets people excited.
That was an objectively underwhelming Apple event, no?

Kind of underwhelming #AppleEvent. All they did was announce new Apple Watch and iPhones (iPhone names are garbage, imo). Nothing about iPad, AirPower (1 year late to market), AirPods, MacBook, Mac mini, Mac Pro, etc.

Apple releases are getting more and more underwhelming every year

Bit of a let down. Not interested in phone or watch only for the rich and foolish. Wanted some real tech news, mini macs, iMac, MacBook. Looks like my next upgrade will be away from iPhone. Pricing out of the market. #AppleEvent

Others just wish the new phones still had the Home button and a headphone jack.
is it only me that don't like the idea of the iPhone's not having a button?? I love the button on the iPhone, it will be so weird without it

Iâm holding into my iPhone 6S plus forever. Never getting rid of the headphone jack

And some were more keen to take a trip down memory lane and get nostalgic about the time when iPhones had just 8GB of storage capacity and cost as little as $US199.
Today, we pay our respect and remember when the new iPhone price was $199.00 and people got by with only 8gb. #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/uXF0mUkh4M

THE ‘FASCINATING’ NEW DIRECTION FOR APPLE
Surprisingly, the most interesting updates came early in the event when the company introduced its Apple Watch 4 range.
Probably the biggest cheers from the audience this morning came when Apple revealed the watch’s electrocardiogram capability that can record the electrical activity of your heart and check for signs of heart disease and stroke.
“The new Apple Watch’s ability to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) may actually save lives,” wrote Dr Eugene Gu on Twitter.
Also, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. If the Apple Watch can detect changes in the ECG when a person vigorously exercises, similar to an exercise stress test we do in the clinic, we could screen for coronary artery disease on a massive scale.

The company also unveiled a capability that enables the watch to know when its user has fallen down and will alert emergency services and friends.
“This introduction of the Apple Watch was fascinating,” Wall Street Journal tech writer Joanna Stern said. “Clear to me Apple is also going after an older market with the fall detection and the heart health features.”
Of all the Apple announcements, this one generated the most intrigue and excitement.
This introduction of the Apple Watch was fascinating. Very few shots of beautiful, young fit people. Clear to me Apple is also going after an older market with the fall detection and the heart health features.

Fall detection in a watch is actually a pretty big deal - lots of grandmas getting Apple watches this Christmas (and having to ask grandkids how they work).

Huge new feature in the Apple Watch Series 4: fall detection. Helpful for the elderly and just about anyone else. The watch will call 911 automatically and send a message to emergency contacts. #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/pzEwTuSCOY

Apple Watch already detected high heart rate, but can now also detect low heart rate and irregular rhythm to flag potential atrial fibrillation. And can now take an ECG on the digital crown. OK, thatâs amazing. #AppleEvent
â Seamus Byrne (@seamus) September 12, 2018
Holy moly. Apple Watch 4 has sensors built into the back and crown that lets you take your own ECG (electrocardiogram)âfirst ever over-the-counter device. Detects atrial fibrillation. A HUGE lifesaving development. #AppleEvent2018 pic.twitter.com/jFtX7XFeKU
â David Pogue (@Pogue) September 12, 2018
For me, the biggest news in todayâs Apple dog/pony was the Apple Watch - and not for the bigger design. The inclusion of atrial fibrillation detection and ECG capabilities is huge - those will literally save lives.
â Dwight Silverman (@dsilverman) September 12, 2018
Well, the lives of those who can afford it, anyway.
