Anti-woke online commentator Matt Walsh says Australian TV shows are a ‘crime against humanity’

Right-wing commentator Matt Walsh has torn into Australia again, taking aim at what he described as a “woke” remake of the hit sitcom The Office.

Far-right US commentator Matt Walsh has taken another mighty dig at Australia after the release of the first trailer for the all-Aussie remake of The Office.

Walsh, who produces documentaries on a variety of right-wing talking points, has had his eye on Australia for some time, proudly declaring the country as the “weakest, wokest, lamest” on Earth.

In a recent tirade, Walsh claimed he’s been “at war” with Australia. He said the country had “transformed into the single weakest and lamest hellscape on the planet”.

In a 13-minute video shared to his three million YouTube subscribers, Walsh said he felt “compelled” to wade back into the ring.

“Even after calling out Australia as extensively as I have, being one of the only people in conservative media that’s following this story about Australia being lame as closely as I am, today, I feel compelled, obligated even, to speak up and trash Australia once more,” Walsh said.

Having only seen a short trailer for The Office remake, the inflamed Youtuber accused Australian TV shows of indulging in “woke, progressive moralising,” calling them a “crime against humanity”.

He argued the remake was not created to be funny but to push an ideological agenda.

“The point is to make a political statement, to push their ideology while destroying the original show by association,” Walsh said.

“They had an entire season of material to harvest and they couldn’t find a single moment of real comedy.

“Instead it does the opposite. It sets up another rehash of the same kind of woke, progressive moralising that we’re all very familiar with at this point.”

The conservative commentator was particularly irked by the gender-swapping of key characters.

He claimed the female versions of Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute didn’t capture the humour of the original.

Walsh concluded by “cancelling” both the Australian remake and the entire country.

He is known for spewing a strong anti-transgender and anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric.

His 2022 film, What Is a Woman?, was heavily criticised by transgender groups and activists, with the magazine Current Affairs describing it has a “feature-length attack on transgender people that accuses them of being delusional about reality and posing a threat to women and children”.

In February 2023, the podcaster claimed that having a child come out as transgender would be a “fate worse than death”. Later that same month, he claimed he would “rather be dead” than have one of his children come out as transgender.

He has also previously referred to pride flags as a “hate symbol” and encouraged people to treat them with “disdain”.

Walsh has openly stated that same-sex couples should not be allowed to adopt children.

Prime Video last Wednesday released the first look at the much-anticipated local iteration of the cult franchise, which was first made famous with the UK’s 2001 series starring comedian Ricky Gervais in what is considered one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time.

But, much like any time Gervais’ fictional office manger David Brent attempted to clumsily entertain his employees, reaction has gone down like a lead balloon.

Hundreds of comments on the Aussie trailer, posted to X, are overwhelmingly negative, with users dubbing the preview “awful”, “dreadful” and “cringe”.

There were, however, a peppering of redeeming perspectives, with one user saying, “I laughed a few times. Will give it a shot.”

“Hot take, doesn’t look that bad,” another wrote.

The Office stars Sydney comedian Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard, the managing director of fictional Sydney-based packaging company, Flinley Craddick.Ward, 43, is the first woman out of 13 remakes to lead the franchise, which chronicles an oft-cringe-worthy office environment and its colourful, mismatched assortment of employees.

It will premiere on Prime Video October 18.
