A new study has found pro-marijuana Twitter users are more active in sending tweets
A RECREATIONAL drug often associated with unproductive losers has been proven to do quite the opposite … well in terms of Twitter at least.
A RECREATIONAL drug often associated with laziness has been proven to do quite the opposite … well in terms of Twitter at least.
A new study from researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine has found those who toke love to tweet.
The researches examined the sentiment and themes of marijuana-related chatter on Twitter with intriguing results.
After sifting through the entirety of tweets in February of 2014 searching for hashtags like #weed #stoner #ganja and a long list of others, they estimated one out of every 2000 tweets was marijuana related.
That is an astounding 7.7 million pot-related tweets per month.
From here researchers collected influential Twitter users who had more than 755 followers and sampled 7000 of their tweets.
It was found that there was a heavy swing toward pro-weed sentiment making it 15 times more common than the opposing view.
77 per cent of users expressed positive sentiments toward the drug, 18 per cent were neutral and only 5 per cent were against it.
The popular topics of discussion among the pro-pot participants were legalisation, being high at the time of the tweet, marijuana and sex, and mentions of songs linked to marijuana use.
In the opposing camp, anti-pot people said smoking weed was unattractive, made people losers and also mentioned songs linked to marijuana use.
The study also found the majority of tweets about marijuana were sent and received by Twitter users aged younger than 25 years.
