Security expert warns the dangers of posting your boarding pass online
MOST of us are guilty of posting this picture before we go on a big holiday, but it just be the worst thing you upload.
YOU need to stop posting the humble-brag boarding pass photos that you place online, and not just because they’re really annoying.
Cyber-security site Krebs on Security detailed this week how the barcodes found on boarding passes are full of your private information that anyone can access if they see the code.
The scariest part being that no special equipment is needed, only free, basic barcode reading software.
As the site says, the barcodes on boarding passes can include your full name, arrival and departure airports, the airline you’re flying, flight record finder and your frequent flyer number.
While on the surface having access to this information doesn’t sound that scary, what people can do with it certainly is.
Krebs on Security detailed how a reader was able to use a picture of a Lufthansa boarding pass to get the information needed to log into a frequent flyer account on the Lufthansa website.
“Not only could I see this one flight, but I could see ANY future flights that were booked to his frequent flyer number from the Star Alliance,” the reader said.
Once someone has access into an account they will be able do anything from cancelling a future flight to changing personal information related to the account. If you’re someone who has racked up a lot of frequent flyer points, someone would be able to access your account, add themself as a family member and transfer your points to their account.
Don’t forget this can also apply if someone got access to your physical boarding pass, so make sure you never leave that behind on the plane.
