A man with no fixed address allegedly sent death threats and harassing emails to a member of federal parliament.

Australian Federal Police swooped on the 39-year-old at Brisbane international airport on Tuesday before remanding him into custody.

The man appeared before Brisbane Magistrates Court that same day charged with using a carriage service to make a threat to kill a person.

The man was also charged with using the service to make a threat to kill another person as well as five counts of using a carriage service to harass or make threats.

If convicted, the man faces up to 10 years behind bars.

AFP Commander Naomi Binstead said the AFP took all reports regarding the safety and security of Australian high office holders seriously.

“The AFP supports political expression and freedom of speech, but when it leads to criminal behaviour – including threats and harassment – it will not be tolerated,” she said.

“The AFP has world-leading technology to identify individuals who break the law by harassing, menacing or threatening Commonwealth officials.”

The man will reappear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
