‘He’s gone’: Woman leaving her husband for getting booster vaccine
A woman has declared she is leaving her vaccinated husband amid high tensions at Covid protests in New Zealand.
The anger and passion of anti-vaccine protesters has been laid bare outside New Zealand parliament, with one woman revealing she is leaving her husband because he got the booster jab.
Hundreds of people have gathered and clashed with police, in what authorities have labelled “unprecedented” for the country.
“I’m leaving my husband. He got the booster today. He’s gone. I don’t want anything to do with him,” one woman told New Zealand’s 1 News on day three of the protest on Thursday.
“I honestly seriously believe he is going to die – that’s getting off topic.”
Further on in the news report, the same woman said: “I will die for my grandchildren today”.
Footage of the interview has since gone viral on Tik Tok, with more than 50,000 liking a recording of the woman, and commenters overwhelmingly supporting the husband’s decision.
“I think the husband won this one,” one joked.
Another added: “He knew what he was doing.”
At least 120 protesters, rallying against vaccine mandates and Covid restrictions, were arrested on Thursday and two police were injured.
The protest began Tuesday as a copycat of a “Freedom Convoy” action by Canadian truckers, with hundreds of semi-trailers and campervans jamming streets in central Wellington.
Tents were set up across the lawns of parliament, with people vowing to stay “as long as it takes”.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said the views of the protesters don’t represent the majority of New Zealanders.
“Relative to the people that are at parliament now on the very day that they’re there, tens of thousands of people went out and got vaccinated. It is not reflective of where the rest of New Zealand is at right now,” she said.
There are vaccine mandates in New Zealand across health, disability, education, fire and emergency, police, defence and correctional workforce sectors.
There are also vaccine requirements for other businesses covered by the My Vaccine Pass, including food and drink services (not takeaway), events and gyms.
