Take a look at this 3D-printed robot. It seems innocent enough.

However, in the hands of a well-known Californian hacker, it can become a device that can crack a combination lock in little as 30 seconds.

Samy Kamkar has made a name for himself cracking locks and last week he showcased his design that takes advantage of a Master Lock security vulnerability.

The security researcher said the “Code Breaker” capitalised on a design flaw with the dial interaction and shackle.

“Without doing any work, this can open the lock entirely automatically in 80 combinations,” he told Wired.

“If you do one little test first, it can crack the lock in eight combinations of less.

“The machine pretty much brute forces the lock for you. You attach it, leave it, and it does its thing.”

Kamkar said he created the James Bond-esque gadgetry for his own enjoyment and to highlight the laughable protection combination locks offer.

“Security people know about this, but the general public doesn’t,” he said.

“I hope getting this out there helps people make better decisions about the locks they use.”
