Australia's top 15 Twitter feeds
WE'VE scoured the Twitter feeds of Australia to unearth the country's most enthralling handles. Are you following them too?
WITH over 200 million active users world-wide who tweet over 400 million times per day, Twitter is a busy global community.
But sometimes, there's no place like home.
And while 'best of' Twitter lists are nothing new, we're yet to see one strictly for us Aussies.
So we put it to the people and scoured the Twitter feeds of our fellow Australians to discover the most compelling, creative and critical minds this country has to offer.
Reckon we got it right? Let us know what you think via Twitter @newscomauHQ | @the_mattyoung
"If social media is the new window to the nation's soul, voters prefer Kevin Rudd to Julia Gillard at much higher rates than even the polls have revealed," writes Paul Toohey.
A quick comparison in followers: Rudd: 1,238,268 | Gillard: 399,197 | Abbott: 131,371
Need we say more.
@GracieKaja Without a sense of humour, you would die in this business. KRudd
Australia's favourite tabloid playboy has switched from texting to tweeting, and this time, he's older and a little wiser. Yes, he'll post the occasional selfie, but his tweets are a delicious look-in at the life of one of the most controversial Australians of our time. With a few creepy tweets to his lover @ElizabethHurley thrown in.
Good luck to all the Australian team today against NZ Time to bring out the mongrel & show everyone how much playing for Aust means to you
Not one to let her country down, actress Rebel Wilson is flying the Aussie flag loud and proud. A scan of her feed reveals she's a fan of the reply, so send her a shout out, you might get some love in return.
Bogans forever! @kylieminogue x pic.twitter.com/ZOw9Pr73za
4. Russell Crowe @russellcrowe
For his bizarre tweets about UFOs, deep-leg squats and love for maps and Julia Gillard. Enough said.
Bullshit & party politics aside...M. Turnbull would be a great prime minister... Julia G is my choice though . Leader through tough times.
Socceroos star Tim Cahill is the true gentleman of Twitter and embodies everything Australians love about sport; grace, pride and humility. And with the Socceroos on their way to World Cup glory (one can hope), he'll need all the support he can get!
THANKYOU AUSTRALIA my 3RD and HOLGERS 8TH WORLDCUP. Dreams do come True @FOXSportsNews pic.twitter.com/SEeJHyPQmw
You won't find many Aussie footballers with over half a million followers on Twitter. In fact, Quade Cooper is so good at it he was described by one colleague as the "King of Twitter". You'll find his page littered with posts on his favourite new play thing, "video Instagram", aka, Vine.
This what happens when you get two weeks off.. Become a dry balls on vine...#bored https://t.co/64QZGhg643
The Morning Show host Larry Emdur received a number of mentions when posed the question: "Who is Australia's best twit?". Maybe it's the sultry profile pic? You be the judge.
When I was eating my kebab in Byron Bay at 1am , Kanye may have called me to ask me for a bub's name and I may have said Kebub Kardashian
Comedian and ex-radio presenter Scott Dooley is one of the FUNNIEST PEOPLE EVER. Our one gripe is his serious lack of interactions between fans. Come on Dools, it's not all about you.
I'm spending too much time on twitter. My friend just told me she was pregnant. Igave her a star, said "favourite" and walked away.
9. Sarah Hanson-Young @sarahinthesen8
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young might be considered shrill and unpopular in her home state of South Australia, according to some, but this gal is a trailblazer in Australian politics; she is the youngest woman elected to Federal Parliament and one of the savviest politicians on social media.
Pauline Hanson's bid to reignite her policy of hate and play the race card has no place in modern day Australian politics.
10. Brendan Maclean @macleanbrendan
He is one of the most polarising people on Twitter, but you've got to hand it to the singer, Triple J radio broadcaster and Great Gatsby star Brendan Maclean, he's a talented fella. Even if he does want to make you hurl a bag of potatoes at him, you just can't look away.
I can't believe a bucket of foundation won #TheVoiceAu
Radio and TV broadcaster Paul Murray is one of Australia's finest examples of how journalists should use Twitter. He tweets live news updates, isn't afraid to debate issues with followers, shares content and just seems like a really nice bloke. Brownie points.
Despite a nation's wishful thinking here's where we are - PM won't quit, Rudd won't challenge & JG will sack anyone who tells her to go.
It can be a little slow between tweets but the way Australia's 2011 Census delivers facts has become renowned on the Twitterverse. Witty, informative and incredibly timely. You'll love it.
Congratulations #Socceroos! Census data reveals there are 7,862 professional sports people in Australia.
Jo Thornely - aka Australia's most amusing blogger - is not afraid to poke fun at herself and the world. And that's what makes her droll feed so addictive; she has a way of reeling you in, then spitting you back out.
Not sure if I'm asleep at my desk or not. I'd ask this singing centipede, but it keeps turning into peanut butter when I punch it.
For football fans and not-so-football fans, these two gals are the modern citizen's approach to entertaining football commentary. And everything else in between. Except for AFL (fan warning: steer clear). They're bitchy, but lovable. And so right.
feel like Fergo and Duges need a good talking to by a scary Samoan mama. that would set them straight.
Famous Mag sub-editor Kate Fox certainly has a way with words and is hands down Australia's funniest single lady. From bad dates, hangovers, and a hilarious Kimye reference or two, she's one to watch.
Watching original 90210 makes me happy, but sad I still haven't found a man like Dylan McKay.
