AN attempted murderer who is on the run is taunting police.

Michael McInnes, who was jailed for six years in December 2010 for leaving a man with "substantial permanent disabilities" after a vicious attack, has been posting pictures of his time on the run on his Facebook page.

McInnes has not returned from day leave granted by Castle Huntly prison, near Dundee, Scotland, on December 4.

It took police a week to publicly reveal that McInnes had disappeared.

But he is clearly not scared, with lots of pictures of himself partying, laughing and cuddling up to unsuspecting partygoers in Charlies nightclub in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, Daily Record reported.

He boasted that the night out at one of his old haunts took place just three days after he went on the run.

In replies to his postings, his Facebook friends joked: "Run like the wind" and: "You're the hide n seek champion lol."

The judge, Lord Pentland, who jailed McInnes decided he was so dangerous that he gave him an extended sentence to protect the public. His victim Kevin McNee was left with McInnes's boot marks on his head and spent three months fighting for his life in hospital and nine months in a brain injury rehab unit.

"The report assesses you as a high risk of reoffending - and a high risk of causing serious further harm in the event that you reoffend," said Lord Pentland.

Less than three years after Lord Pentland's words of warning", the Scottish Prison Service allowed him out on home visits.

Scottish Labour justice spokesman Graeme Pearson, a former senior detective, said: "Every time a prisoner escapes, people will rightly be concerned.

"But in this instance, it will be even more concerning that it has taken almost a week for this news to be made public. This sort of episode can only undermine public confidence in the prison service."
