NSW Police have shared a Facebook post reminding drivers of an unusual road rule that could cost you hundreds and see you hit with multiple demerits.

Northern Beaches Police said in the post on Sunday any driver caught with their hand or “anything else” hanging out the window of door of a car can be fined. The fine for the offence is $349 and comes with three demerit points.

“The only exception is when the driver is giving a hand signal to indicate changing direction to the right, or slowing and stopping,” Northern Beaches Police said.

The post generated attention online with more than 870 people commenting and 360 shares.

Some were outraged by the fine, saying it was a “waste of time”.

“Shame on you for promoting nanny state laws. You have such an important and worthwhile job with such limited resources, so focus on what’s meaningful,” one man said.

But others said it was an important law to keep people safe.

“It’s actually a safety issue and thankfully just a warning ATM here … A friend of mine lost her arm many years ago having it placed on the side window,” one woman said.

“Can confirm because I was fined for this about 15 years ago,” another woman commented on the post, saying years earlier she’d been pulled over by an RBT officer who fined her.

“It was $150 back then,” she said.
