Woman trapped in van after crashing into power pole in Sydney’s east

A woman has been rushed to hospital after she was trapped in a van which crashed into a power pole on a busy street.

A woman has been rushed to hospital after she was trapped in a van for more than an hour after it crashed into a power pole in Sydney’s east.

Emergency services were called to Botany Rd in Matraville about 12.30pm on Saturday after reports of a van had collided with a pole.

The driver, a 45-year-old man, had been able to extricate himself from the vehicle, while the female passenger was trapped inside.

The 29-year-old woman was seated in the front passenger seat and was freed by the Police Rescue Squad shortly before 2pm.

Both occupants were treated at the scene by paramedics, before being rushed to the St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst.

The woman was transported in a stable but serious condition with a leg injury, while the driver underwent mandatory testing as a precaution.

Police have since established a crime scene at the site of the crash, which will be examined by specialists from the Crash Investigation Unit.

West bound lanes of Botany Rd remained closed at 3.30pm between Bunnerong Rd and Girawah Pl, with motorists asked to avoid the area.

Police were also appealing for anyone with information – or dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Maroubra Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
