A man has died after crashing his car before first light in Sydney’s lower north shore.

Just after 4am on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports a vehicle had crashed on Epping Rd, near Mowbray Rd.

The driver – who was alone in the car – died at the scene.

The incident caused traffic to bank up onto the Hills Motorway due to road closures as authorities worked to clear the scene.

Heavy peak-hour delays impacted the area, after Epping Rd was closed in the eastbound direction.

Mowbray Rd was also closed between Epping Rd and Whitfield Ave.

At the time, commuters were urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes, including the Lane Cove Tunnel or Lane Cove Rd to avoid delays.

All lanes reopened about 10am on Tuesday, with traffic also returning to normal.

Adding to Tuesday’s chaos was a car breakdown on the Lane Cove Tunnel off-ramp to the Pacific Highway about 8.11am.

Eastbound traffic was affected, and conditions eased after 9.11am.
