Toyota Landcruiser tops Holden Commodre as most stolen car

THE steadfast Toyota Landcruiser has knocked the Holden Commodore off a spot neither of the cars probably wanted in the first place.

TOYOTA Landcruisers were the most stolen vehicles in Queensland over the past three years, knocking Holden Commodores off the top spot, the RACQ says.

The result came in an analysis of more than 50,000 claims for stolen vehicles in the past three years that also revealed 18 of the top 20 suburbs targeted by thieves were in the southeast corner.

Toyota Landcruisers, Ford Falcons and Toyota Corollas were the most commonly stolen cars in the past three years.

Southport, on the Gold Coast, was the top suburb for stolen cars from January 2015 to the end of December last year, the analysis shows.

Red Hill in inner Brisbane, Harristown in Toowoomba, and Caboolture filled the next spots on the list. Besides Harristown, Maryborough was the only location outside of the southeast corner on the list.

RACQ spokeswoman Kirsty Clinton said Toyota Landcruisers, Ford Falcons and Toyota Corollas were the most commonly stolen cars in the past three years.

“Traditionally, Holden Commodores had been at the top of the list for a long time but maybe Holden Commodore owners have heeded our warnings and are protecting their vehicles,” she said.

Ms Clinton said the analysis did not reveal why thieves favoured any particular suburbs or cars. “We’re not sure why these areas are the most at risk for car theft but we do know there are things people can do to reduce their risk,” she said.

“They sound really simple but we’re so busy these days that we often forget the simple things.

“You need to lock your vehicle whenever you’re not with it and keep the windows up.

“Wherever possible, park in a secure garage or park somewhere well-lit and well-populated.

“Thieves are often opportunistic so don’t tempt them by leaving valuables visible inside.

“Importantly, treat your keys like cash. Keep them on you and don’t leave them lying around.”
