Two 13-year-olds are fighting for their lives following an incident on an e-scooter which police believe was being ridden by both teenagers.

Two teenagers were left fighting for their lives following an e-scooter crash on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Tuesday night.

Police believe the pair, a 13-year-old Mountain Creek boy and a 13-year-old Buderim girl, were riding the same e-scooter downhill along George St in Alexandra Headland when they crashed into a vehicle at a Mayfield St crossing.

A Queensland Police spokesman said witnesses have told investigators the young girl was riding as a passenger on the device.

“The driver of the vehicle and multiple bystanders stopped to render immediate first aid to the teenagers ahead of the emergency response, however, both sustained critical injuries,” he said.

The boy was flown from the scene by Lifeflight helicopter to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, while the girl was taken by road to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old Mooloolaba woman, was not physically injured.

Queensland Police have called on witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage, to come forward and assist the investigation.

Under Queensland’s road rules, children between the ages of 12 and 16 are allowed to ride an e-scooter if they’re supervised by an adult.

It is against the law to carry a passenger on an e-scooter.

Just last month, police announced a crackdown on dangerous e-scooter riding, with a focus on Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

Queensland Police Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream said police would focus on safety equipment and adherence to road rules.

“We’ve seen a number of injury accidents and fatalities with e-scooters and it’s something we will be paying close attention to in the city and on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts over the festive period,” he said.
