Teen girls killed in horror ‘joy ride’ crash, 16yo boy charged

Two teenage girls have died in a horror “joy ride” crash in heavy rain and a 16-year-old boy has been charged over their deaths.

A teenage boy has been arrested and charged after the vehicle he was travelling in left the road and crashed into a tree, killing two teenage girls.

Police believed four teenagers were “joy-riding” in a Toyota sedan on Saturday night in the Canberra suburb of Hume on the Monaro Highway when the crash happened.

First responders on the scene presumed the crash happened on Saturday night. The crash was reported to police when passer-by saw it on Sunday.

The boy, 16, was charged with two counts of culpable driving causing death after the two girls, aged 14 and 15, were declared dead at the scene.

Two teenage girls were killed in the crash.

Police alleged two occupants of the car, a teenage boy thought to have been behind the wheel when it crashed and another teenage boy, fled the scene. They have since been tracked down.

“Police located them at residences a short time later,” ACT Police said.

Speed may have been a factor, police say.

“They have received medical attention and are currently assisting investigators from the major collision team with their inquiries.”

It is understood the Toyota left the roadway and crashed through a row of temporary fencing by the side of the road before smashing into a tree.

Detectives are now interviewing the two male teens about what caused the crash and whether “severe speed might have been a factor”.
