Teen dies in hospital days after car bursts into flames
An 18-year-old man has died in hospital four days after the car he was in with four other teens crashed into a tree and burst into flames.
A teenager has died in hospital after a police pursuit ended in a horror crash in Sydney’s lower north shore.
Five teens – aged between 16 and 18 years old – were seriously injured after the car they were crammed inside crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Cammeray.
An 18-year-old man, who was a back-seat passenger in the car, died overnight after spending the last four days at Royal North Shore Hospital.
The crash came after the driver of a Holden Commodore – a 16-year-old girl – allegedly failed to pull over for police.
Officers had been called to the area following reports a 17-year-old boy had been assaulted by four other people.
“Police were called to a report that a male had been assaulted by four other persons, and obviously that vehicle was connected to that incident,” Detective Superintendent Paul Devaney said.
“A 17-year-old male was assaulted and we believe he had organised to meet the occupants of the car – a Holden Commodore.
“The reason for that meeting is yet to be determined.”
When police tried to pull over the 16-year-old driver, it is alleged she sped away.
A police chase ensued but was quickly terminated due to the teen’s “manner of driving”.
It was then that the car allegedly swerved and crashed into a tree, causing it to explode in flames.
“This was a horrific incident that is likely to have lifelong consequences for all involved,” Superintendent Devaney said.
Police allege the driver was unlicensed.
