Sydney’s south to get more speed cameras after deadly crash and hooning
One state is set to introduce more speed cameras in an attempt to stop hooning after two young boys died on a popular road.
A deadly crash that took the lives of two young boys has prompted the NSW government to put more speed cameras on a notorious road for hoons.
Three new fixed speed cameras will be installed on The Grand Parade in Sydney’s south in order to address excessive speeding in the area.
An urgent review was ordered into speeding in the area after a tragic incident in August when a nine and 10-year-old were killed after their car they were in lost control and hit a tree near the road.
There have been 64 crashes where someone was injured on The Grand Parade from 2018 to 2022, including 16 where a person was seriously hurt.
Roads Minister John Graham said the state government had a “zero tolerance for hoons” or anyone who broke the speed limit.
“These cameras on The Grand Parade will encourage people to adjust their speed, stay within the limit and prevent hooning,” he said.
Transport for NSW has already carried out more than 700 hours of mobile speed camera operations on The Grand Parade, but Mr Graham said that it is “clear that more can be done and that’s exactly what we are doing with these camera installations”.
“Mobile speed camera operations will also be increased along The Grand Parade over coming months, and police will continue to target illegal behaviour on the roads in this location,” he said.
“There is never an excuse for speeding and I‘m reminding everyone to make sure they stick to the speed limit and drive to the conditions, so everyone makes it home safely.”
Two cameras will be installed in November at Brighton-Le Sands near Gordon St and a third camera will be installed at Sans Souci near Alice St in early 2024.
The Alice St speed camera will monitor speeding traffic in both directions.
Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper said the community had “lost patience with the hoons”.
“These new fixed speed cameras, along with mobile speed cameras will work together to prevent further fatalities and serious injuries along this popular stretch of road,” he said.
