A suspended driver who shamelessly partook in his own makeshift hot lap has delivered police an unbelievable excuse after being busted speeding in an unregistered car.

The 49-year-old Sydney man caught the attention of an onlooker on Friday at Mount Panorama in Bathurst, in the NSW Central Tablelands, after he was spotted speeding on the wrong side of the road in a green Ford Falcon with no rego plates.

Police attached to Bathurst Highway Patrol, which was already patrolling nearby, responded to the call just after 11.20am and shortly after, clocked the XY Ford Falcon doing 125km/hr on Conrod Straight, formerly known as Main Straight.

The man was subsequently pulled over and returned a negative breath test, however police discovered his license had been suspended two weeks earlier for drink driving.

According to the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, the driver told officers he had picked up the car from Melbourne after having it imported from South Africa, and intended to drive it home to Sydney.

When asked why he didn’t have an unregistered vehicle permit, the driver told them, “they were closed”.

He had an even more ridiculous explanation for his manner of driving and excessive speed, telling officers he was “just doing a re-enactment” of the Bathurst 1000 race.

Police impounded the car for three months due to the excessive speed.

The man was issued with a field court attendance notice to appear at Bathurst Local Court in March 2022 for driving while suspended.

He was issued penalty notices for the offences of exceeding the speed by more than 45km/hr and using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

While the 6.2km loop is considered Australia’s most famous racing track, on non-race days it is a regular public road, with several permanent residents relying on it to get to their homes.
