Terrifying moment truck's brakes fail on hill

Dashcam footage has captured the terrifying moment a truck careens down a hill, forcing cars into oncoming traffic, after its brakes failed.

The footage, shared to social media, shows the truck driving down Mt Victoria – in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales.

The video time stamp puts the incident at just before 3pm on March 7.

Facebook page Dash Cam Owners Australia identified the truck as a “loaded semi”, weighing around 40 tonnes. The time stamp records truck hitting a top speed of 44km as it rolls down the hill.

In the footage, the driver can be heard blasting the truck’s horn in an effort to warn the vehicles ahead that the truck is in trouble.

The sedans and SUVs driving ahead of the truck in the single downhill lane can then be seen crossing double lines as the road moves around a bend.

Fortunately, there was no traffic merging from the double oncoming lanes as they did.

As the truck rolls around the corner, the driver manoeuvres the semi into a merging lane and almost off the side of the road to avoid colliding with a four-wheel drive towing a caravan.

The caravan’s tail lights can be seen light up as it brakes to let a dark SUV, which sped out and ahead of the truck, back into the lane and out of the path of oncoming traffic.

The truck eventually comes level with the caravan, almost hitting a safety ramp sign as it does – horn still blaring. The caravan veers only slightly to the right as the truck begins to slow.

“F***ing idiot,” the driver exclaims.

Eventually, he is able to move the truck safely off the road and up the dirt safety ramp, where there he shouts there’s “still nothing” from the brakes.

“F*** they’re still not bloody stopping!” he said as the truck began rolling backwards.

Eventually, though, the truck does stop and the driver gets out to inspect the brakes and call for help.

All drivers narrowly avoided disaster, with the truck squeezing between the caravan and the road edge. Picture: Facebook.

Reactions to the terrifying footage came in thick and fast, with many praising the truck driver and some of the other vehicles for avoiding trouble.

“F me. Well done for pulling her up safely.,” one woman wrote.

“Perfect timing when the truck ramp bay appeared … very close call for caravan people,” another wrote.

“Can only imagine how stressful this was for the driver. Good thinking to get on the horn, props to the cars for realising what was happening and getting out of the way.”

Another joked they were glad to be “sitting on the loo” to watch the video.

“Well done to the professional driver,” they added.

”Some caravaners are in their own little world,” another wrote. “Driver did an awesome job of pulling that off without any accident.”
