Road rule quiz exposes drivers who need to be ‘retested’ to learn their give way rules

It’s been suggested some drivers should be forced to sit their licence tests again after flubbing an easy question about right of way rules.

Tricky road rules you're probably breaking

There are calls for some drivers to be forced to take their test again after an online quiz revealed gaps in their knowledge.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads served up a morning quiz on its Facebook page, asking followers to answer a relatively simple question.

“Who goes first? The blue car turning right or the orange car turning left?” The Department wrote on its Facebook page on Monday morning.

The answer is the orange car, as most people who have passed their licence test will know.

“When turning right at an uncontrolled crossroad (without a slip lane), you must give way to vehicles coming from the opposite direction that are driving straight ahead through the intersection or turning left at the intersection. Therefore, the orange car goes first,” the Department explained.

Queensland is preparing for an election on October 31 and some areas of the government are in caretaker mode, which could potentially be the reason behind Monday’s question being a fair sight easier than some of the previous pieces of road rule trivia.

That didn’t stop some people getting it wrong of course, which prompted swift rebukes from other, more knowledgeable commenters.

“If anyone doesn’t know that orange goes first, they’re a strong case for rules retesting,” one responder wrote.

“If you can‘t answer this one, you shouldn’t be on the road,” said another.

“Blue car has right of way,” one commenter said, potentially biased by the blue Holden Commodore that served as their Facebook cover photo.

“In Rockhampton it’s which ever is the P-plater,” joked another.

Others were confused by the question as they weren’t used to seeing so many cars using their indicator at once.

Some noted New Zealanders might struggle with the question as the rules were actually different across the ditch, but more accurate commenters pointed out the rules were changed for Kiwis more than eight years ago to mirror ours.
