RACQ quiz reveals Queensland drivers don’t know their give way rules

Motorists were stumped by a question on how to give way, while others who thought they knew their road rules were embarrassingly exposed.

Tricky road rules you're probably breaking

A simple quiz on how to give way on the roads has exposed gaps in some driver’s knowledge, while others have called for the rules to be simplified.

The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland posed the question to its followers on Facebook with a picture of two cars facing a give way sign and another rounding a corner.

“In which order should the vehicles go?”

#QuizTime - in which order should the vehicles go? a. Green, Blue, Red b. Blue, Red, Green c. Red, Blue, Green d....

The answer as we now know is option D: The green car continues on their way, followed by the red car as both it and the blue car are facing give way signs, so the blue car gives way to vehicles on their right.

“This is why there are so many accidents, people not knowing the road rules,” one commenter wrote after seeing several people listing the wrong answer.

“I was surprised how many people didn’t realise to give way to right,” wrote another, while one commenter went further to say that “whoever got it wrong should not be on the road”.

“Why can’t we just have standard intersections, T-junctions and roundabouts instead of a multitude of variations of each?” Another asked.

“These variations are a recipe for disaster,’ they added.

One commenter suggested the RACQ should “advocate for compulsory road rules exams with drivers licence renewal”.

“If not knowing the road rules meant not being able to renew your licence, surely it would encourage people to actively study the road rules, and then with that awareness be able to drive in a safer manner.”

Not everyone agreed it would solve the problem, even if they supported the idea, instead calling for harsher penalties.

“After watching episodes of Highway Patrol, local news, etc, so many people are caught driving unlicensed, expired, never ever bothered to get one, suspended, etc.

“We need serious consequences for the pathetic attitudes of a section of the community who seem to be above the law,” they said.
