Motorists are being warned of a five-day operation targeting reckless driving over the Easter long weekend, as double demerits are introduced.

Double demerits will begin at 12.01am on Thursday in NSW, ACT and Western Australia as Aussies hit the roads for the long weekend.

The operation will target driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speed, fatigue, non-wearing of seatbelts and helmets, and mobile phone use.

Failing to wear a seatbelt in NSW will cost drivers $362 and six demerit points, while using a mobile phone while driving will set motorists back $362 and a whopping 10 demerit points.

NSW Acting Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman said officers would be “out and about doing their best to keep the roads safe” this Easter.

“(We want everyone to) arrive at their destinations in time for a wonderful weekend with loved ones,” she said.

The five-day operation will begin at 12.01am on Thursday, April 6, running until 11.59pm on Monday, April 10.

“The message is simple; drive to the speed limit, focus on the road – not your phone, and make sure you have a plan B if you are drinking,” Ms Chapman said.

“For the last two years, we’ve seen seven fatalities on the road each Easter long weekend.

“The goal this year is to reduce that number.”

Transport for NSW head of transport safety Peter Dunphy urged motorists to remember that Thursday, April 6, is a school day, meaning children will be about and school zones will be active.

“So make sure you slow down and take extra care around schools,” he said.
