According to Victoria Police, it is still unclear where the piece of wood came from.
“Neither the driver nor passenger saw where the wood came from,” Senior Constable Adam West said.
“Investigators wish to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage.”
The driver, a 71-year-old Malvern man, walked away with a black eye while his passenger, a 70-year-old Malvern woman, was uninjured.
But the pair, who were travelling at 80km/h in their Porsche Macan SUV at the time, were lucky to avoid far worse.
Photos from the aftermath show how the plank of wood smashed through the middle of the windscreen and ended up wedged against the driver’s headrest.
