Driver's close call in EastLink tunnel

Multiple drivers have had a lucky escape after frightening dashcam footage emerged of an allegedly stolen car driving through a Melbourne tunnel in the wrong direction.

Two teenagers were arrested when the allegedly stolen white Nissan Juke SUV crashed outside a city train station after being chased by police across Melbourne for three hours on Boxing Day.

The chase started when the police air wing spotted the vehicle driving erratically in the Essendon area just after 5pm on Saturday.

Police said their helicopter followed the car for about three hours and guided police vehicles on the ground as they pursued the Nissan across much of metropolitan Melbourne.

Police allege on a number of occasions, the car allegedly drove into oncoming traffic on several freeways at high speeds.

Scary dashcam footage obtained by NCA NewsWire showed multiple cars narrowly avoid colliding with the allegedly stolen Nissan as it sped through the EastLink tunnel in the wrong direction just before 6.30pm.

The video showed a white ute and dark sedan having to slam on their brakes as the headlights from the Nissan moved towards them in the same lane.

Luckily, a crash was avoided and the Nissan left the tunnel in the wrong direction.

The police pursuit came to a spectacular conclusion when the allegedly stolen Nissan crashed into several cars outside Southern Cross Railway Station about 8pm.

Police said they quickly arrested the driver but the passenger allegedly ran off into the train station.

Protective services officers searched the station and found the teenager hiding in a train a short time later.

Police said more charges were likely following the examination of CCTV and dashcam footage.

Both teens have been remanded to face a children's court at a later date.

Police said there were no injuries reported during the collisions.

More than 60 drivers reported seeing the speeding vehicle and Darebin Crime Investigation Unit detectives are urging them to come forward.
