Police are now investigating a shocking road rage attack in Perth as they reveal the victim made one crucial mistake.

Perthnow reports officers are trying to identify the driver involved in the violent incident in the suburb of Thornlie.

He was recorded laying punches through a window, only stopping when bystanders intervened.

The video shows the man in a white shirt ignoring pleas to stop and unleashing both fists on a fellow driver who misses the green light, during peak hour in Thornlie.

He launches a dozen swings – until a witness steps in – while others pull out their phones.

“Stay out of it now and call the police,” a bystander can be heard saying.

“If someone cuts you off just drive on, you don’t need to engage with them,” Police Minister David Michael said.

It’s unclear what sparked the outburst and police say it doesn’t matter.

“For that second of satisfaction he’s gonna potentially come off with criminal charges and as you say got the red light,” State Traffic Commander Mike Bell told 7NEWS.

Meanwhile, the target of the man’s fury – didn’t appear to react and didn’t appear badly hurt.

But police say he did make one mistake.

“Stay in the vehicle, leave the windows up – it looks like the window was down – I’m not victim blaming – just saying these are the things you can do to keep yourselves safe,” Cmdr Bell said.
