Driver caught reading while driving at 100km/h down freeway
A motorist could get a massive fine after being caught doing something incredibly stupid while driving 100km/h down a Melbourne freeway.
Over the years Aussie drivers have been caught engaging in multiple dangerous activities behind the wheel, from talking on the phone to eating a bowl of cereal.
Now one Melbourne man has joined the ranks of idiotic drivers after being caught on film reading a book while driving at 100km/h down a busy freeway.
Footage obtained by 9 News shows a man in a sliver van holding a novel in one hand and steering with the other.
The incident was reportedly filmed on the Princes Freeway just past Dohertys Rd at 5pm yesterday.
Victoria Police said they are looking into the incident, claiming the driver is putting himself and others at risk.
“This footage appears to show a person reading while driving. If that’s the case, this is very disturbing and high-risk behaviour that not only puts that driver at risk, but everyone else in close proximity,” a police spokesperson told 9 News.
“Driving is a complex task that requires full concentration and it is essential drivers minimise the risk of distraction in their vehicle.”
Motorists caught distracted behind the wheel face a massive $387 fine and three demerit points.
Social media users were quick to criticise the driver.
“When will people realise that a licence is a privilege not a God-given right,” one person said.
“Obviously not reading a road rules book,” another wrote.
Many even claimed they have seen people reading books before, among other dangerous things.
“I see stuff like this every day when driving a truck you can look down on everyone with their phones, iPads, laptops, bowls of food, hamburgers, beer etc,” one person wrote.
Another added: “I’ve seen people reading before. Even shaving their face.”
