Cyclist’s near miss with alleged red light runner caught on camera

A cyclist’s horrifying near miss with a car allegedly running a red light has been caught on video.

Near miss West Melbourne

A cyclist has been lucky to walk away from a terrifying near miss at a busy Melbourne intersection after a car allegedly ran a red light, with the incident caught on camera.

The video, posted to Reddit, shows the cyclist entering the pedestrian crossing at the intersection at Dynon Rd and Moonee Ponds Creek bike trail on Wednesday evening.

Just as the cyclist is about to cross onto the path, the rider is forced to come to a sudden halt, and his back tyre rises off the ground, as a BMW coupe drives past.

The user who posted the video claimed the light had been red “for a while” and that all over cars had stopped, with the pedestrian and bike lights clearly green in the video.

“A car swerved around the already stationary cars at the red to run the red light nearly hitting the cyclist in front of me,” the user wrote on Reddit on Thursday.

“I reported it to North Melbourne police station but they said they cannot do anything with the video unless the police personally witnesses this or I have witnesses.

“The car appears to be a silver BMW e93 coupe Hardtop convertible.”

The rider appealed to cyclists who were riding in the area who may have witnessed the incident to make a report to police, with others sympathising with the experience.

“The awful thing is it happens so regularly. What do we need to do to make motorists give way to other road users,” one user said on Thursday.

Another added: “I’m having more and more near misses like these as a cyclist, and a pedestrian. I can’t understand it, do they actually have to kill someone to learn a lesson?”

Other commenters suggested that red light cameras should be placed at every intersection, and penalties should be increased for people caught running a red light.
