Cyclist rages after being sent flying by car

A man riding a bike through a red pedestrian crossing light has been sent flying by a car at a busy Sydney intersection.

A man riding a bike through a red pedestrian crossing light has been sent flying by a car at a busy Sydney intersection.

Undated footage shared by Dashcam Owners Australia on Monday showed the man and a female companion, who had earlier crossed the road, then furiously pounding on the passenger window of the white sedan.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, then walks off the road leaving his BMX lying in the middle of the intersection, as the furious woman repeatedly tries to open the door of the car.

Video of the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Richmond Road and Third Ave in Blacktown just opposite the showground, has been viewed 86,000 times and sparked debate over who was in the wrong.

“Perfect example why bike riders must dismount to cross roads, if not riding in them,” one person commented. “Imagine if the bike rider in fact was someone elderly on motorised wheelchair?”

They added, “Note that this is a large intersection, one I know extremely well, and the green light to cross always expires before crossing complete.”

But others were firmly on the driver’s side, noting they had a green light and the pedestrian crossing was clearly red.

“Cyclist totally in the wrong,” wrote one.

“Green light, rider no helmet, crossing on a red pedestrian light, no one’s fault but the bike rider,” another said.

A third added, “Green light the whole time for the car, [the] lady who [crossed] was lucky it wasn’t her crossing when she didn’t have the clear. Poor person in the car not only had the bike person hit their car but the lady as well started on them and open the door.”

NSW Police has been contacted for comment.
