An Adelaide cyclist who was stopped for riding without lights left his mark on a police officer after he allegedly spat on and bit the policeman when he realised he would be fined.

The cyclist, 29, was riding along Harrow Rd in Somerton Park when he was stopped by the officer.

When the man was told he would be fined for riding without having lights on, he allegedly retaliated by spitting on the policeman and tried to ride away.

He was then chased by the officer.

During the man’s arrest, he allegedly bit and punched the policeman and was later charged with aggravated assault.

He has been bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court next month.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries but was not admitted.
