Council worker fined $100 after photo of illegal park was shared online

An Australian council worker has been slapped with a $100 fine after a photo of his park was shared in a community Facebook page.

A Queensland council worker has been slapped with a fine from their own employer after breaking the council’s own parking laws.

A picture posted online showed the car parked on a verge which according to Moreton Bay Regional Council is “illegal”.

“It is illegal to park on a verge, or to park on the footpath verge,” A MBRC spokesperson told local publication, TheMoreton Daily.

“Council staff are not exempt from Local Laws and the Local Laws team is in contact with the driver of that vehicle.

“The fine for illegally parking on a verge is $100. Anyone who parks on a verge will receive an infringement notice.”

The photo showed the worker parked clearly above the verge, on a resident’s lawn.

However, the Queensland municipality is considering two-up, two-down parking policy on its tighter residential streets after a community survey showed a major want for change.

The change would mean parking with two wheels on the verge and two on the road would be allowed where suitable.

MBRC asked locals: “Should Council allow cars to park with two wheels up on a road verge in narrow streets?”

And 85 per cent of the 973 local respondents said cars should be allowed to park two-up two-down in narrow streets.

“Council plans to amend the Local Laws to allow Council to impose conditions on two-up two-down parking in future if needed (e.g. minimum clearance from footpath)” the council said in response to the community feedback.

However, the two-up, two-down concession would have done little for the council worker snapped with all four wheels well and truly on the nature strip.
