Big question behind Sydney driver’s daily illegal parking act

A Sydney driver’s consistent illegal and costly parking act has raised questions after a neighbour revealed one bizarre detail on the situation.

A confused Sydney resident has questioned why a driver has chosen to consistently flout driving laws, despite receiving frequent parking tickets.

The Reddit user, Gal_gadonutt, shared a photo of a silver car, which they said is consistently parked in a ‘No Stopping’ zone in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Waterloo. The ‘No Stopping’ sign means drivers cannot stop along the designated kerb or road at any point, unless it’s an emergency.

They said while the street is “quiet and infrequently patrolled,” the driver has regularly parked in that spot for “at least two years,” and receives parking tickets “every third day or so”.

They also observed that the car is always “full of tradie gear,” with the poster questioning whether the driver is a “working holiday visa holder”.

“I highly doubt they just pay the tickets and parking usually is available so they pretty much blatantly are disregarding the rules for convenience,” they wrote.

The neighbour said they were also confused as to why the driver’s registration and license wasn’t suspended for not paying the overdue fines.

“This has been going on for at least two years now,” they asked.

Speaking to news.com.au, a spokesperson for the City of Sydney said the council was aware of the repeat offender.

“Multiple infringements have been issued. The City of Sydney is now undertaking further enquiries regarding the actions of this vehicle,” they said.

“Rangers conduct regular patrols and issue infringements to illegally parked vehicles.”

In the comments, Reddit members schemed alternative ideas as to why the costly and illegal parking act had continued for so long. Suggestions included that the car was a stolen vehicle, or that it belongs to an international driver who might be unaware of the rules, or believe they’ll be able to dodge the fees.

Other theories were a bit more offbeat.

“May be a fake ticket they put on [their] windscreen to make people think they have already been booked. Dangerous place to stop, report to police,” one commenter wrote.

“I know a girl who let a ‘friend’ borrow her car while she was on holiday. She got home and found her car had received almost $1300 in fines from parking around the CBD. The friend promptly disappeared and moved overseas,” claimed another commenter.

According to Revenue NSW, parking fines incur a penalty of $275 but no demerit points.

Residents are also able to challenge parking fines at the nominated Local Court, however sufficient evidence is needed in order to overturn the penalty.
