Aussie spot among world’s most insta-worthy road trips
In the digital world, likes are currency, and these picturesque spots will get you more than others. And one strip of Aussie road is punching well above its weight.
Not all road trips were created equal, according to Instagram. But one Aussie drive punches well above its weight on a global scale.
British licence plate company click4reg has analysed 15 globally known road trips to see which is the most insta-famous.
The No.1 ranking was, no surprise, taken by US Route 66. The famous strip of tarmac runs from Chicago through Midwest states such as Kansas, Oklahoma through to Texas and ends in Santa Monica, California.
The sheer length of route 66 — nearly 4000km — means that there is far more space to shoot and share on Instagram than on other road trips on the list. There are more than 1.7 million posts with the Route 66 hashtag.
But the second most instagrammed road trip was Australia’s own Great Ocean Road in Victoria.
The picturesque route runs from Torquay along the coast west to Allansford. At about 250km, the Great Ocean Road is one of Australia’s top tourist destinations.
Locals and international visitors swarm along the coastal strip at all times of year to take in the views and landmarks such as the Twelve Apostles.
The Victorian hotspot has about 1.3 million photos with the Great Ocean Road hashtag.
There was daylight to the next most instagrammed trip, which was California’s Pacific Coast Highway with about 235,000 posts.
The Pacific Coast Highway stretches for more than 1000km between Los Angeles and San Francisco, taking in Santa Barbara, Monterey and Big Sur State park.
The next most popular was the drive through the Valley of Fire in Nevada with about 220,000 posts depicting the twisted landscape of red rocks and sandstone.
Rounding out the top five was the Ring Road in Iceland, also known as Route 1, which has about 150,000 posts.
As its name suggests the 1332km Ring Road goes around the perimeter of Iceland, linking the major population centres and taking in breathtaking scenery.
