2025 MG HS Hybrid+ review
This Chinese carmaker’s latest hybrid SUV proves the brand has evolved into a serious competitor.
MG has come a long way since re-entering the Australian market back in 2016.
The new MG HS Hybrid+ is a clear sign of how far the brand has matured.
For a drive-away price starting at $40,990, the Hybrid+ introduces a new petrol-electric hybrid (HEV) powertrain, paired with upgraded tech and competitive performance and efficiency figures.
MG claims this model is the most powerful among the hybrid SUV class and features an innovative water-cooled lithium-ion pack designed to withstand Australia’s most extreme temperatures more efficiently than air-cooled alternatives.

Under the bonnet features a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid system producing 165kW and 340Nm that only powers the front wheels.
Unfortunately, there is no All Wheel Drive train option, but you have to remember this SUV isn’t all about performance. This SUV aims to impress on school runs, weekend getaways, and the daily juggle with its quiet hybrid powertrain, comfy ride, and family-friendly space.
We will get to how it rides in a bit, but for efficiency, it’s surprisingly good.
MG claims 5.2L/100km, but we saw results closer to 5.4L/100km, and expect to pay a little extra at the bowser because it requires the more expensive 95RON premium unleaded.
However, with a full tank of fuel and a decently charged battery, you’ll easily get over 1000 km of range.
We were in the flagship Essence grade ($44,990 drive-away), which immediately feels more up-market thanks to its panoramic glass roof and faux-leather interior.
The cabin’s practicality and presentation will snare buyers before they even test drive the HS Hybrid+.
At a glance, the cabin looks premium, but there are a few cost-cutting reminders if you go looking for them.
There are no physical knobs or dials for climate control; you’ll have to go into the infotainment screen’s settings to find them.

On the upside, the system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the upgraded audio package works brilliantly.
The improved sound deadening adds a layer of refinement, making the HS Hybrid+ a pleasant family cruiser for those long trips along the coast.
The boot space is decent at 507L and can be expanded to 1484L when the rear seats are folded down.
So how does it drive?
Better than expected ... genuinely enjoyable, in fact.
The engine, electric motor and transmission blend seamlessly between EV, petrol, hybrid and regenerative modes, and most of the time, you won’t even notice the engine kicking in and out.
Performance isn’t electric-car instant, but yet again, this car isn’t aiming to impress with raw speed; however, there is plenty on tap for overtaking or darting through city traffic.
The steering is nicely weighted and accurate, making cornering a breeze, and body roll is well contained.
The regenerative braking system in the Hybrid+ offers multiple settings through the infotainment’s car settings menu, including a more aggressive mode that mimics single-pedal driving.
The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and you perch high for decent visibility, while the driver aids function effectively but will bing and bong annoyingly if you stray.
However, one feature I found to be a godsend was MG’s Pilot Custom button. It’s a clever solution to a problem that’s becoming more prevalent.

Swipe down on the infotainment screen, and a dedicated MG Pilot Custom shortcut appears, letting you quickly disable the specific safety and assistance features you find annoying. You’ll need to do it each time you start the car, but it’s far easier than digging through multiple menus before setting off on your journey.
It’s a simple feature that made this vehicle much more pleasant to live with.

Verdict
Four stars
The HS Hybrid+ shows how seriously MG is taking its Australian presence. There are still hints of cost-cutting and some tech quirks, but the hybrid powertrain, comfort, performance and clever usability tweaks make this one of the brand’s most convincing family-friendly SUVs. No matter how you look at it, with its vast interior space and long list of features, it’s a lot of SUV for the money. And considering the cheapest hybrid RAV4 is around $46,000 drive-away, the HS Hybrid+ certainly can’t be overlooked.
